How to Capture Baby's First Year in Milestone Sessions

That first year of your baby's life is so full of changes and firsts, and they just go through so much development. No matter how many babies we've had, we want to capture all the things.

It used to be that everyone had their baby photographed as a newborn, 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 1 year. I know I'm guilty. And I don't even know how I got baby ready and to the photography studio that many times in 1 year without losing my mind. But that was just what you did. And you had all of the department store prints to prove it. (Thank goodness studio photography has evolved into something beautiful and timeless.)

I just don't think all of that is necessary. Number one, because of sanity. Number two, because of the expense. And number 3, because there are prime times to have them photographed, and there are only 3 - not 5. Now if having the 5 photo shoots is your dream, go for it, mama! I'm not saying you're wrong at all.

But if you want to capture baby's first year in milestone sessions, I do think there are 3 times that would be best to get baby in front of the camera.

Newborn Photos

As frighteningly stressful as it might seem to have a photo shoot in the thick of the newborn stage, it's too special to miss. If you don't want to worry about getting yourself and the family ready, don't. Just have the focus on baby. However, I will always recommend having the whole family take part. It's not just about the newborn, but also to celebrate how this new life has changed your family for the better.

Sitter Session

Whenever your baby starts sitting up on his/her own is the next time I would have photos done. For your little one, that could be anywhere from 6-9 months. A lot of cute shots can be taken at this stage. Sitting up, on the belly, on the back playing with his feet. And they have such a cute personality coming out. They've changed so much since they were a newborn.

One Year Photo Shoot

Celebrate making it through that first year and seeing how much baby has grown and changed. One year portraits are just a must. Timeless heirloom portraits. A cake smash. Whichever, or both. It's so important to capture this stage.

To capture baby's first year, I have a 1st year bundle that includes all 3 of these milestone sessions. I also have a bundle for maternity + baby's first year. So, if you're ready to make sure you don't miss out on any of those sessions, go ahead and book your first one today!
